After an autoupdate to Crashplan around the end of June, 2015, using the unsupported "trick" to access a headless crashplan service didn't work any more.

Under Linux, the trick involved editting /usr/local/crashplan/conf/ui.properties and setting the port to a non-default value. The crashplan desktop would then try to connect to that port, which you could the forward (using ssh) to your headless crashplan service.

Well, that stopped working. After some searching, I discovered that the crashplan desktop was now reading the port number from a file called "/var/lib/crashplan/.ui_info". Presumably, this file is created by the local crashplan service.
